Web Accessible Code Libraries & Design Patterns

Web Axe, a blog and podcast on web accessibility, has compiled an extensive list of recommended code libraries, patterns, and design systems. It's a really great list from a variety of resources, not just from the USA.

Some of the resources are over my head - I'm not a web developer - but they are good references to ask your web developer and designer, whether a paid consultant, employee or volunteer, to review and apply.

One of my favorites is the Online Accessibility Toolkit from the South Australian Government, specifically the section on web development, which asks important questions that link to guidance on how to say "YES":

    • Can you reach anything that’s interactive using the tab key?
    • Can you use a screen reader to access the page content?
    • Are you using accurate headings on your page?
    • Are you using semantic elements and roles?
    • Do images have good alternative 'alt' text?
    • Is there enough contrast between text and its background colour?

There's also an online community you can join and free online accessibility courses and resources to help you on your way.
