Global e-waste: up 21 per cent in 5 years

UN warns of global e-waste wave as amount of gadgets dumped jumps 21% in 5 years. A record 53.6 million tonnes (Mt) of e-waste was produced globally in 2019 — the weight of 350 cruise ships the size of the Queen Mary 2; $57 billion in gold and other components discarded — mostly dumped or burned. That's 7.3kg per person on the planet (https://globalewaste.org/news/surge-global-waste/).

Reduce - Do you really need that new device, does your work place have a disposal policy for tech kit?

Reuse - Give old computers a new lease of life with a Linux operating system, my Dell laptop runs the latest Linux Mint despite being over ten years old.

Recycle - If your Local Authority / municipality does not have an electronic waste recycling stream then they should, if like mine they do but it is not good enough then let them know.

One more:

Demand - comment on the social media of tech companies, the people that produce your smart phone, your lap top, your tablet, your headphones, etc., and tell them they must have an easy-to-access take-back program for their products where THEY are responsible for appropriately recycling of them, and write your elected representatives to demand they pass legislation requiring this!
