Having worked for over 20 years in the fresh produce industry, I was planning a more ethical catering company when Covid 19 struck. During the first lockdown I was involved in procurement of fresh produce for Edible London, who at the time were distributing from Alexandra Palace and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club parcels of food for residents who needed it.
After seeing the demand within the community for food aid funding, I worked to find more sustainable solutions. So I started Streetbox with the aim of having that continuous source of funding. Our main campaign of Buy a Box, Give a Box enables us to support our food aid partners with the same amount of produce as we give to our customers. We do this mostly by sourcing the best fresh surplus available in local markets. We see our box scheme as a means to raising awareness, widening our volunteer network and of course, feeding families. We operate 3 small pilots with local schools in areas we operate to provide a free fresh snack daily to the schoolchildren. We don't shout about our pilots and we have identified a few white elephants along the way! But we celebrate our failures, learn and keep trying until something works in a way that benefits our organisations.
By the end of 2020 we had helped provide over 57 tonnes of produce to charitable organisations. Why I'm on Techsoup? We're looking at ways to work with our volunteers and currently we see Slack as a means to have a more structured forum type chat, other than whatsapp which is difficult to manage. We want to engage with volunteers in a large way through Slack by signposting them to the right areas in our organisation where they might want to help. At the moment we have structured a basic workspace and are just starting (as of 18th Feb) to invite volunteers for a bit of a juicing session. Hopefully we'll be mobilising volunteers through slack so we can steer the project in the right direction quickly. So i'm really interested in solutions that can benefit organisations like ours, not just Slack but anything that makes the job easier! If you would like to chat with us more, want to follow the discussion, or think you can help in any way, then find us at https://join.slack.com/t/streetboxcic/shared_invite/zt-m9f2a8pd-6kI7xLSERXphpGL6PbxHjQ Still very very early days on Slack so excuse the layout. So i know thats not really my bio, but life is hectic at the moment and we are on a mission and so need to get it out there! Myself, I have a 6 and an 8 year old and an extremely patient and wonderful partner who handles them when i pull silly shifts. I enjoy a bit of problem solving and like finding a bargain. I try to be plastic free and although not vegetarian myself, i do think a more plant based diet is the way forward. Not a huge fan of processed foods and am on the hunt for a chef who will make me loads of celeriac katsu curry! Our not for profit community interest company (CIC) is limited by guarantee and cannot be sold off to a third party. We are working hard to change a food system and of course have fun whilst we do it!br,Chris
